You Spend A Lifetime In Your Body... Why Not Enjoy It

Are you caught in the rut of wanting to exercise but not having the time for it?  What if you could exercise anytime, anywhere, while doing other things? Sound farfetched? It’s not. All that is required is some “unlearning.” Most of us have lots of ingrained thinking around the subjects of both movement  and exercise… like you have to go to the gym, or do vigorous, repetitive type activity, wear certain clothing, etc. Not so! What you have to know is the impact technology is having on your body. That’s where Vitalogy comes in.

The information overload, constant stress and perpetual change due to technology cause our muscles to tighten up. We become physically unable to relax.  The specific outcome that occurs is we no longer have good posture. Posture is the characteristic position or bearing of your body under gravity.  It greatly influences how much range of motion and pain-free movement you have.

Youth is posture.

Posture is the relationship of the muscles and bones in the body; to each other, and to a mid-line point running through the center of your body. It is the basis by which you physically do what you do each day. Walking is posture manifesting itself through motion. Show me a person with good posture and I'll show you a person who moves like a young person.

Technology under utilizes our bodies. Meanwhile, the body was designed to move, a lot … all day long actually. Now who does this anymore? Also, life today is a preponderance of repetitive movements, so the trick then, is to give your body a whole bunch of varied movements.  Instead of “exercises” Vitalogy calls them “random-cizes.”

Everyone’s body is different. Yet why are most gym programs designed as if everyone’s body is the same?

Everyone’s body is different, yet many “exercise” programs treat them all the same.  Likewise many exercise programs are designed for athletes and/or people under the age of 30 whose bodies can tolerate extreme activity.  Needless injuries and failure occur to those who attempt workouts beyond their current ability level.

What the body (and your body) is screaming out for is non-habitual movement. The good news is that your body has a built-in ability to adjust itself and realign its structure. It's the natural or human instinct to stretch. The habitual gestures you exhibit daily are your body’s way of realigning itself.  This built-in survival mechanism is activated through non-habitual movement, something as simple as shaking your body. When you exercise that should be the primary focus. When it is, all the rest will fall into place.

What is needed is exercise for the rest of us.

Technology has developed to the point where having a body is almost an option now. You need fingers for the keyboard and eyes for the monitor. A chair helps too, because we are typically sitting somewhere working at the computer. Now the thumb skills people have, from text messaging and video games… off the charts compared to 50 years ago. And extreme athletic performance, that always gets better. But, by and large the rest of the standards of the body’s ability to perform have fallen, and more than anything this traces back to technology.

If sitting at the computer is what you do, day after day, year after year, then your body, designed and built for activity, lots of activity actually, and pretty much everyday, isn’t getting any. This ultimately causes it to fall into disrepair.

Most of us endlessly repeat a few movements all day. We sit and we stand and we walk a little bit from the car to the house or to the office. Even if you take walks occasionally, while the walk is very good for you in certain ways, the movement itself though, is exactly the same… the same length of stride over and over, no variation or very little, with the movements. And frankly, there is not a lot of fun in doing the same thing over and over. The same is true for going to the gym and most other physical activity. For many of us sex is one of the few things left that involves random movement.

It’s wise.

First and foremost is technology’s affect on our posture. The posture associated with the elderly, hunched over and bent forward, is the very same posture that millions of office workers and children also have. So, sitting at the laptop you're in exactly the same posture as grandma, just 50 years ahead of her.  That's all. Technology actually accelerates what “Father Time” already does such a good job of.

The truth is that likely your time is short and your attention span limited.  Because most of us are on chronic overwhelm due to everything going on in our lives, taking care of our body becomes one more thing we have to do... as if we don’t have enough already.

Instead of just handing you weights, we hand you tools. We give you a frame of reference so you can understand your body and obtain the guidance necessary to meet your specific goals.

If it’s not fun you won’t do it. Fun is what facilitates the motivation to take the all-important action step.

It’s practical.

So there are axiomatic truths and fundamental principles, and we have to understand how they govern the body’s function in life. That’s the big picture, the big idea. Just learn that and you will be well equipped.

In Anatomy, structure governs function. One of the biggest differences between ordinary people and athletes is that athletes are very efficient when they move. It's more than just the training, the nutrition, and the gene pool. It's the efficient way they move. It’s why they look so good, are so graceful. They are efficient movers.  They waste nothing.

I have worked with world-class Olympic sprinters.  They are completely relaxed when they move. Their bodies are in perfect synchronization.  This clearly shows in the way they run.  Now contrast that with a “weekend warrior.” This is the person we occasionally see jogging down the street. What do they look like when they run? Ah huh, pounding the pavement, body going every which way. You can actually see the shock from each step running through their body, all the way up into their face. This is not a good thing!

They are completely unbalanced and not in good posture. So when people ask me if running is good for them, my answer is “Yes, if you have good posture.” For those with bad posture, the vast majority of American health care providers are standing on the side of the road, licking their chops. This is the herniated disc whose surgery puts the doctor’s kid thru private school. This is the bum knee requiring pain medication and trips to the doctor. This is the back that endlessly goes out until the next visit to the chiropractor.

It’s basic and cost effective.

Individual training in Vitalogy techniques starts with an assessment of your posture. Coupled with that is learning about posture itself. It can be done in an hour, so don’t sweat it! Then, a complete program will be put together… based on your posture.

We will teach you what movement is, how to improve yours, how to get back some of the movement you may have lost. How physical activity is part of overall care of your body and good health maintenance.

Get maximum benefits in a brief amount of time. This is done through proper technique to keep your program safe and prevent injury. Clarify your body type to maximize your assets and minimize your liabilities.

Then we discuss and work on removing any psychological barriers to improvement. This is because we all have issues with our bodies; sometimes from childhood, sometimes from society, sometimes from how advertisers try to market to us.

Modify your routine as your wants and needs change… and in order to always maintain a high fun quotient. Put spontaneity into your program and enjoy physical activity, movement, and exercise!

It gets results because it’s training for life.

Although exercise machines serve a purpose, especially in rehabilitation, they reinforce habitual movement which is precisely what the body does not need or want.

With Vitalogy Personal Training it’s as simple as a few dumbbells, some push-up bars, a stretch rope or an exercise ball, or a stick (that’s right a stick!) and with some music, all you need to give your body all that it can handle. You can create a complete workout in 10-20 minutes, which is how much time most people have.

You can do it at home, work, or the gym… really anywhere!
It’s convenient and easy.

Exercise is simply movement with a bit more effort and duration.

The Four Elements Of Exercise:

elements

Maximize your time and effort by developing the ability to accomplish all four elements of exercise simultaneously.Vitalogy’s personal training program provides immediate and lasting results. Your motivation will be thru the roof once you realize how easily this can fit into your schedule.

The Six Aspects of fitness:

Speed – How fast you can perform movements.
Strength – The condition and physical power of your musculature.
Flexibility – Your ability to easily perform bending and twisting movements.
Endurance – How long you can perform movements; your lung capacity and heart strength.
Balance – How well centered and stable you are while performing movements.
Coordination – How well the various parts of your body work together.

The Vitalogy Scale: A Physical Range Of Motion

The Vitalogy Personal Training Program Has Four Steps:

  • Creating realistic goals.
  • Establishing activity guidelines.
  • Monitoring progress.
  • Making adjustments.

Mastering Vitalogy’s Personal Training Program gives you the knowledge to get the most out of whatever you do… and to be able to modify it as desired.

The idea is to work out smart, not just hard.  Proper exercise technique rather than heavy weights is what safely enhances strength and flexibility. With proper technique, adding variety makes your routine more fun, effective, challenging and safe. Along with proper technique, adding variation to all your movements will make your routine more interesting, effective and enjoyable.

Key

We will review the three components of exercise:

Frequency: How often you exercise.
Intensity: How much effort is involved.
Duration: The amount of time spent exercising.

At Vitalogy, we are not here for 6-week programs to get fit quickly or lose 20 pounds fast. This is a program for life. These activities can be done at home, work or at the gym.  Learn the advantages and disadvantages of your body type to maximize your assets and minimize your liabilities.

“I have been in and out of gyms for years, hurt myself more than once, and never learned what I was supposed to do. Then a friend introduced me to the Vitalogy personal training program. It’s so simple… a few dumbbells, a set of pushup bars, and an exercise ball, and my favorite music. Now, in ten minutes I can get a great workout that leaves me loose, relaxed, energized and feeling good about myself. No more monthly deductions from my checkbook for gym memberships I don’t use.”

Steve, Atlanta

“As a competitive athlete, I have incorporated the principles of Vitalogy into my routine. It is the main reason, I believe, why I have been injury free. I see how lots of athletes and people who work out a lot beat their bodies up unnecessarily, and then pay for it later on. Thanks to Vitalogy, I will never be one of them!”
