Vitalogy Takes Massage Therapy To The Next Level To Reduce Pain And Restore Movement, Flexibility and Youth
One-On-One Bodywork Sessions With Will Nelson Surpass Results From Both Sports Massage and Deep Tissue Massage Therapy
Pain and lack of flexibility rob you of movement...
Movement is the essence of the human body, but movement is difficult or even impossible when confronted by pain. In time, the muscles become tight, and that creates more pain and lack of flexibility.
Movement is incredibly important... it's how we dialogue with the body in the same way we use language to dialogue with the mind. The truth about any type of self improvement is that mind and body mirror each other. Neither can be imbalanced without impacting the other.
Self improvement cannot be done apart from the body...
The body and mind are so interrelated that every time something happens… whether it's trauma, negative conditioning, or unresolved experiences, a "physical residue" of muscle tension forms. This accumulates over time, making it more and more difficult for the body to move easily because of this “accumulation.” It's a defensive coping mechanism on the part of the body that ultimately traps you inside yourself. It's the physical embodiment of the emotional angst that becomes the hallmark of both your movement and posture.
In addition, we are habitual creatures. We tend to do the same thing the same way over and over. This is compounded by our modern technological culture where we habitually sit in the car, in front of the computer, perform repetitive movements, stand in line… the list goes on. The overall result is that the amazing human body, constructed for unlimited movement, becomes restricted by culture and habit. We don't move like we were intended to. Today we under utilize our bodies and over utilize our minds.
The objective is to reduce pain, re-establish movement, and improve posture.
As movement and posture are restored, the physical and mental residues of stress, injuries, and truamatic events are released... and Vitalogy's goal is to facilitate awareness of what is being retained in body and mind in order to release it. Vitalogy Massage Therapy is a way to facilitate your body in regaining its natural movement.
Vitalogy Massage Therapy manifests your body’s innate ability to stretch and lengthen itself out by naturally self correcting its alignment. Your body guides itself (and the practitioner) as to how and where it wants to release… without using excessive force or sudden, high impact movements. It is direct, hands-on work done with clothes on that is very different and far more effective than typical massage therapy, deep tissue massage, or sports massage.
You will feel increased movement, flexibility, and range of motion… and lasting pain relief unlike any other form of massage, yoga, or Pilates.
Vitalogy Massage Therapy:
- Increases pain free range of motion and overall flexibility
- Releases tension and restores mobility
- Makes you relaxed, loose, and capable of doing more with your body
- Removes physical rigidity caused by sitting at the computer, repetitive movement, and stimulation overload
- Increases your body’s energy, vitality, and capacity to “enjoy the game of life”
With Vitalogy Massage Therapy, you “Free the body and the mind will follow.”

What makes Vitalogy Massage Therapy unique?
- It’s the only form of therapy specifically designed to combat the effects of stimulation overload and poor posture, what medicine calls “upper cross syndrome.”
- It creates multi-dimensional movement that replicates the experience of daily life; for instance, standing, walking, and general moving about. Physical therapy, traditional massage, and chiropractic work with a static body in at most one or two planes of movement. In daily life, however, we rarely move about in this manner.
- Through the use of a fixed-point, movable point system, the body is moved in up to five planes of movement simultaneously. The whole body is moving and working together, which replicates real life movement and makes the result of treatment more permanent.
- Vitalogy is the only program based on the unique concept of two postures.
- Clients are taught movements and activities that stimulate new behavior to replace old patterns of body/mind functioning.
NOTE: Will Nelson has also developed a specific approach of working with the body that is designed to evaluate manifestations of core life issues as they are held in the body. Will does this on a limited basis with select individuals. Here you can download a PDF and see if this is right for you.
Moving the whole body instead of one part at a time
Only Vitalogy Massage Therapy moves your entire body as one integrated unit at the same time. This replicates how the body operates in real life – all of it moving together as one. At times your body will be lifted and lowered as you progress through the movements. This further replicates real world situations by involving the effects of gravity. In the process the body adjusts itself and accommodates these positions. Positions become increasingly challenging as the general condition, flexibility, and range of motion of the body improve.
By way of comparison, chiropractic primarily utilizes an isolated and sudden movement to one part of the body while the rest of the body itself is stationary. The entire spinal column and skeletal structure may be adjusted, but it is done forcefully, on a segment-by-segment basis, moving one part at a time while the rest remains still.
While the client is lying down (fully clothed), and their brain is observing, not participating in the movement, the movements employed make their brain feel like their whole body is involved.
In one session, your body receives hundreds of movements, different from your habitual actions involved in standing, sitting, and walking. Talk about a change of pace! Feel your body come alive again. Discover how much looser you can become.
“During my adolescence, I wore a Milwaukee back brace for six years due to severe scoliosis. I was told it was hereditary and that I had to live with it. Several months ago, I attended a seminar given by William Nelson and it was for me nothing short of transformational. It taught me to be in charge of my own health, and that I had a lot of issues with my body that needed resolving. I had a few massage therapy sessions but I didn’t just receive treatment. I became educated. He taught me how to develop a relationship with my body. I came away with tools, knowledge, and a plan. No gimmicks, no fads, just straightforward teaching and a form of mind/body integration that is so very simple, that I can maintain it myself. It’s totally liberating! A whole new vista of expression is now possible.”

The Three Levels of Vitalogy Massage Therapy
Basic Level
Basic level work involves shaking your body, gently at first, then more vigorously for several minutes. This identifies where the body is moving well, and where it is not. This also begins to loosen your entire body. Shaking is done starting at the feet, then moving the legs in and out, then pushing against the side of the pelvis to create lateral flexion, followed by lifting and lowering each side of your body at the ribcage level and pushing your upper body back and forth in lateral flexion.
Here, people don’t assist with the movement, but rather lie there and experience it being done to them. Other movements applied are done with the body held close to “midline”… think of a line drawn thru the center of your body. The farther any movement is done from midline the more complicated or difficult it becomes.
- Basic Vitalogy Bodywork enhances your ability to make the movements of Shaking, Twisting, and Lateral Flexion done in VitalBody.
Intermediate Level
"Poses" are where your body is held in a specific position for 10-60 seconds after gentle shaking or rocking is introduced. The poses take you to the point where your muscle tension limits your movements, then your body is gently rocked past that limitation without exceeding your actual range of motion. As the pose is held, your body should feel heavier and heavier as it lets down and relaxes.
Lateral flexion (think bringing your ear to your shoulder) is the basic movement that is constantly employed. As much as possible, movement is generated into the rib cage or mid-thoracic region of the spine. This is what locks up first as a result of the impact of technology, i.e. excessive sitting, lack of general movement, and this requires the greatest amount of attention.
- Intermediate Vitalogy Bodywork breaks through your physical residues and muscle tension.
Advanced Level
At this level, all three elements of movement - distance, direction, and velocity - are utilized in increased proportions. This is only done after you have been sufficiently loosened up by first shaking the body and then going thru several “poses” in the basic and intermediate levels.
This is also where non-kinesthetic related movements are utilized to get at the manifestations of core life issues as they are held in the body. For example, lifting your left arm and pulling on your right foot are not related movements per se, but may, however, allow your body to release itself from prior trauma, both physical and/or psychological.
- Advanced Vitalogy Massage Therapy improves the distance you can make movement in, the number of directions you can move in, and the overall speed of your movements.
How It Works
Your session starts with a brief health history and examination of your posture. You lie fully clothed in your favorite sweats or similar type clothing, on a massage table, soft foam mats, or on the floor. Shoes and jewelry are removed, and all pockets are emptied. Cologne or perfume should not be worn, and makeup kept to a minimum. Loosening up your body thru VitalBody movements immediately beforehand facilitates your body in retaining the looseness gained during the session. You will be taught how to loosen up your body before the session and how to keep it that way afterwards.
The Result Of Vitalogy Message Therapy is to Release, Lengthen, and Realign your body.
Release: Removing the physical stress from your body. Often, this is the result of stimulation overload or “too much input,” as well as the contraction due to daily stress and the effects of excessive sitting, repetitive movements, etc.
Lengthen: Stretching and elongating (lengthening out) your body with sufficient motion and velocity (speed) to counteract accumulated contraction from physical and mental stress, as well as the forces of gravity.
Realign: Returning the bones and joints of your skeletal structure back to their correct relative positions.
